Brisée

Brisée est une vidéo expérimentale à caractère scientifique qui tente de capter, de percevoir ou rendre visible le chant de l’animal. Deux concepts sont ici convoqués. L’interstice spécifique (un espace interstitiel poétique, comme une ligne d’horizon) et le seuil de la mort se répondent, par l’intermédiaire d’un mollusque consommé à grande échelle : la moule.
L’animal n’est pas choisi au hasard : avant l’expérience, sa coquille est déjà fissurée, cassée ou brisée. Nul doute qu’il aurait fini en fragments insignifiants parmi les déchets, promis à une souffrance sans limites et silencieuse. Au début de l’expérience, le mollusque est placé dans un dispositif conçu pour l’œuvre. Naturellement ouvert, il se referme immédiatement dès que la chaleur se fait sentir, révélant par ce repli l’interstice spécifique visible à la jonction entre les deux valves de sa coquille. Puis, au fur et à mesure, la pression due à la chaleur est si forte que le lamellibranche ne peut la retenir. Sa coquille carbonisée annonce d’emblée la couleur. Plus elle s’entrouvre, plus l’interstice spécifique disparait, plus le seuil de la mort se profile. La moule protège cet interstice spécifique au péril de sa vie.
À la fin du processus, le moment précédant la mort de l’animal se répète dans une boucle vidéo, soulignant indéfiniment le chant du cygne de la moule.

Brisée is an scientific experimental video that attempts to capture, detect or reveal animal’s sing. Two concepts are used here. The specific interstice (a poetic interstitial space, like a horizon line) and the death threshold respond to each other, through a large scale consumed mollusc: the mussel.
The animal is not randomly chosen : before the experiment, its shell is already fissured, broken or smashed. For sure it would have ended up in insignificant fragments among the waste, promised to a silent unlimited suffering. At the beginning of the experiment, the mollusc is inserted into a dispositive designed for the work. Naturally open, it immediately closes as soon as the heat is felt, revealing by this fold the specific gap visible at the junction between the two valves of its shell. Then, the pressure due to the heat is so strong that the bivalvia cannot survive. Its carbonized shell immediately announces the colour. The more it opens, the more the specific interstice disappears, the more the threshold of death appears. The mussel protects this specific interstice at the risk of its life.
At the end of the process, the moment before the animal’s death is echoed in a video loop, underlining indefinitely the swan song of the mussel.
